Octopus Venom Solutions

The octopus secretes venom from the posterior salivary gland, and its bite can cause pain and even fatal lesions. According to current research and analysis of octopus-related species, the proteome of octopus venom may contain a mixture of antimicrobial peptides, neurotoxins, etc., and contains new venom proteins/peptides that are different from other animal venoms. Therefore, new toxins from octopus may be more helpful for drug development.

Creative Proteomics provides octopus venom solutions through proteomics methods, analyze the comprehensive proteomic characteristics of the venom, and use a combination of transcriptomics and proteomics to identify and characterize putative toxins.

Services Introduction

Octopus saliva research has always been a hot spot in venom research. Biochemical determination, molecular analysis, and toxicological research on them are very valuable for biological discoveries. Many types of octopus venom contain proteins/peptides with active characteristics, which can provide potential natural sources for the development of drug tools and disease treatment. In order to make better use of octopus venom, we use a combination of genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics to study octopus venom in detail.

  • Transcriptome analysis. We extract RNA from the posterior salivary glands of octopus for sequencing, and then use software to annotate the sequencing data, predict the coding sequence, and annotate it with homology functions.
  • Proteomics analysis. We can build a comprehensive reference protein database of octopus species, and search for mass spectra with reference to transcriptome data for protein identification and quantitative analysis. Highly expressed putative toxins will identified in the posterior salivary glands by combining mass spectrometry with transcription level expression.
