Exosomes isolated from blood and cerebrospinal fluid are cargo containers used by eukaryotic cells to exchange bioactive substances such as proteins, lipids, DNA, messenger RNA (mRNA), and non-coding RNAs. In particular, exosomal miRNAs and proteins have been reported to play a critical role in the pathogenesis and progression of gliomas. Exosomes are rapidly proving their value not only as non-invasive diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers, but also as therapeutic tools specifically targeting GBM cells.
