Protein phosphorylation is the process of transferring the phosphate group from ATP or GTP to specific amino acid residues of proteins (mainly Ser, Tyr, Thr), catalyzed by phosphorylation kinases. Protein phosphorylation is involved in various physiopathological processes such as cell signaling, neural activity, muscle contraction, as well as cell proliferation, development, and differentiation.

The analysis of protein phosphorylation and the identification of phosphorylation sites have become the current concerns in proteomics research.
