Steroids are a class of lipids characterized by four rings arranged in a specific molecular configuration. Steroids can be classified functionally into corticosteroids (like glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids), sex steroids (like progestogens, androgens, and estrogens), neurosteroids, and so on.
In many competitive sports, anabolic steroids such as testosterone are used to enhance physical and athletic performance. There are some methods for testing anabolic steroids or anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS). Several GC-MS and LC-MS/MS assays combined with stable isotope labeled standards have been developed for the determination of bioactive compounds, which has the advantages of minimizing or masking the variations resulting from sample preparation and extractions, as well as high sensitivity and rapid quantitation. Stable isotope labeled steroids can serve as internal standards for conducting tests and developing assays.
