Stable isotope labeling in mammals (SILAM) refers to labeling an entire rodent with heavy stable isotopes to analysis quantitation proteomics by mass spectrometry. The heavy tissues can function as internal standards for quantitative proteomic analysis of basic mammalian physiology and animal models of disease.

Spirulina is a microalga consumed by humans and other animals and 15N labeled spirulina is one source for the labeling diet. It is reported that rats and mice can be successfully labeled with a diet containing spirulina. To label mammals with isotope, the dried 15N spirulina is mixed with a non-protein powder and kneaded with water to form a dough that is shaped into pellets in a similar size to normal rodent diet and dried in a food dehydrator.

As a supplier of isotope labeled products in the industry, Creative Proteomics offers more than 10,000 products labeled with different isotopes of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen. Creative Proteomics supplies labeled and unlabeled spirulina as a rodent food, including 15N labeled spirulina whole cells.
