Nitroimidazole, an organic compound with the formula O2NC3H2N2H, refers to a class of antibiotics. Nitroimidazoles can be used as antibiotics for the treatment and prevention of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria with rare resistance in these organisms. Therefore, they play an important role in the treatment of intra-abdominal and gynecologic sepsis, abscesses and tetanus. In addition, they are a class of antibacterial and anticoccidial drugs used for the treatment of cattle, poultry and pigs. However, it is reported that these compounds display mutagenic, carcinogenic and toxic properties. For this reason, the European Union (EU) has prohibited their use as additives in feed for food-producing species and all of them are currently in Annexe IV of the Council Regulation (EC) 2377/90. It is violative to detect nitroimidazoles found in food-producing animals or in products intended for human consumption according to EU regulation. Gas or liquid chromatography coupled with a mass spectrometer can be used for the confirmation and identification of nitroimidazoles.
