Lipids are biological molecules that are soluble in nonpolar solvents and insoluble in aqueous solution. The main physiological functions of lipids in human physiology include signaling, working as structural components of biological membranes, and providing energy reserves mainly in the forms of triglycerides. Lipids are classified into different types, including fatty acyls, glycerolipids, glycerophospholipids, sphingolipids, saccharolipids, polyketides, and sterol lipids and prenol lipids. A fatty acid, the common component of complex lipids, is a carboxylic acid with a long aliphatic chain. Based on their chain structure and functional groups, fatty acids can be classified into different types, including normal fatty acids (straight chain), branched chain fatty acids, ring containing fatty acids, and fatty acyl-CoA.
