This centrally acting neurotoxic peptide originally isolated from the venom of Apis melifica, is the smallest neurotoxic polypeptide known and is the only polypeptide neurotoxin that passes the blood-brain barrier. It blocks small-conductance Ca2+-activated K+ channels at nanomolar concentrations, induces motor hyperactivity and causes clonic convulsions and respiratory failure.
